A dental mission trip to a remote village in Kenya, organised by Brush For Life International Foundation (BFL), was a life-changing experience — both professionally and personally. The community we served had little to no access to dental or medical care, and many residents had never seen a dentist in their lives. Most people didn't own toothbrushes, and oral hygiene was a completely unfamiliar concept. That gap in education presented a unique challenge — but also an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact.
In collaboration with the Kenya Medical Training College, BFL set up a free clinic where dental professionals — mostly local, with me as the only provider from the U.S. — triaged, treated, and educated. We performed fillings, extractions, cleanings, and provided essential oral health education to help raise awareness. The days were long, hot, and physically demanding, but the gratitude from the villagers made every moment worth it. It was humbling in a way that's difficult to describe unless you've lived it. The connections we formed and the satisfaction of helping people in real need were truly priceless.
Between sessions, we had the opportunity to go on safari, see incredible wildlife up close, and immerse ourselves in the local culture. We met members of different tribes, tried traditional foods, and created friendships that spanned continents. While it was certainly an adventure, it wasn't a typical vacation — it was more intense and more rewarding. There was no lounging around; we had a tight schedule and a clear mission to fulfil, which meant early mornings and long hours.
